Speaking at Expanding the Canon, Expanding the Audience

Dr. Liane Curtis is a musicologist and the President of Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy (wophil.org) a non-profit founded in 2008 to demand equity for women composers and celebrate the legacy of The Women's Philharmonic (1980-2004).  As an activist, she worked to have Amy Beach's name added to the 87 names of male composers that decorate Boston's Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade. The name was unveiled in 2000. She is also President of The Rebecca Clarke Society, and edited A Rebecca Clarke Reader (2004) the first book on this increasingly recognized composer.  Liane began playing cello in public school in Sparks, NV.  Today she lives near Boston, MA, but frequently visits her family in Chico, CA.
