Note from the SITS board

Shakespeare in the Square is NYU’s only club dedicated to performing and producing works by the bard. We are firmly committed to the ideals of free, accessible theatre open to all and performed in the public square. We believe that Shakespeare’s language has the power to captivate a crowd, and that those challenges that come with performing outside only push our ensemble towards innovative and exciting forms of theatre.

Shakespeare in the Square NYU is firmly committed to anti-racist pedagogy. We stand in solidarity with people of marginalized groups against systemic racism, colorism, transphobia, misogyny, homophobia, classism, ableism, religious oppression, and discrimination of all kinds. We seek to cultivate inclusive and productive political conversations in our productions, rehearsals, and events. We recognize that the performance and study of Shakespeare has been historically exclusive to folks of marginalized groups. We dedicate ourselves to the work of combatting incorrect, previously-held notions of who can and should bring Shakespeare into the 21st century.

NYU Shakespeare in the Square is open to all NYU students interested in classical theatre and performance. We encourage anyone with a passion for Shakespeare to audition for our Fall and Spring productions. Students can also become involved in technical roles, such as costume designed and stage management. SITS NYU also hosts events throughout the academic year, including lectures, staged readings, and workshops.
