Multi-genre vocalist Laura Mercado-Wright is recognized for her versatility, expressive depth, and compelling stage presence across symphonic, operatic, and chamber repertoire. A two-time Grammy®-nominated soloist and Latin Grammy® nominee, she is equally at home in canonical works and complex contemporary scores, earning praise for performances that combine vocal precision with dramatic immediacy.
The New York Times has described her singing as “superb”, “dramatically astute,” and “stunning agile”. Her interpretation of Luciano Berio’s Circles for the 50th Anniversary performance at Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall has been noted in particular for its intensity and technical brilliance, underscoring her reputation as a fearless and insightful performer of contemporary music.
A sought-after concert soloist, Mercado-Wright has appeared with the symphonies of Dallas, Plano, and Fort Worth, the Slee Sinfonietta, as well as the Boston Pops and the New York Philharmonic. This is her third appearance as a soloist with the Austin Symphony.
On the operatic stage, Mercado-Wright has collaborated with a broad range of companies, including the Metropolitan Opera Chamber Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, Fort Worth Opera, Gotham Chamber Opera, Alamo City Opera, Opera Philadelphia, and Utah Festival Opera. She made her Austin Opera debut in 2022 as the teacher in Mason Bates’ The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs. Other contemporary works include premieres of Toshio Hosokawa’s The Raven at the Los Angeles International New Music Festival, Lembit Beecher’s I Have No Stories To Tell You, and Charles Wuorinen’s It Happens Like This.
An accomplished ensemble artist, Laura maintains an active presence in the choral world as a regular member and frequent soloist with the Grammy® Award–winning, Austin ensemble Conspirare, as well as other professional vocal groups nationwide, including Lorelei Ensemble, Seraphic Fire, Evergreen Ensemble, Vocal Arts Ensemble of Cincinnati, Artefact Ensemble, and The Crossing.
