Steve Hackman
Conductor

Steve Hackman is a multi-hyphenate musical and creative visionary, boldly redefining art music in the 21st century. Classically trained at the highest level yet equally adept in popular styles, his remarkable musical fluency and technique set him apart. He seamlessly blends roles as a composer, conductor, producer, DJ, arranger, songwriter, singer, and pianist.

Hackman's polymathic abilities allow him to create original works that fuse incisive modernism with elevated classicism. His groundbreaking orchestral fusions — such as Brahms X Radiohead and The Resurrection Mixtape (Mahler X Notorious BIG X Tupac Shakur) — have been praised by Seen and Heard International as “among the most daring and innovative modern experiments in avant-classical” music.

By merging classical and contemporary genres, Hackman introduces symphony orchestras to future audiences. He has conducted these works to sold-out crowds at nearly every major American orchestra, including the Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle, Detroit, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Oregon, and Boston Pops orchestras.

Hackman’s signature fusion of classicism and modernism is making an impact on some of the world’s biggest stages. In 2024 alone, he contributed to the writing team for the Academy Awards, collaborated with Charlie Puth, The War and Treaty, and Rickey Minor to arrange the In Memoriam segment for the Emmy Awards, and played a role in the writing teams for both the Democratic National Convention and Jimmy Carter’s 100th Birthday Celebration.

That same year, Hackman premiered two of his latest orchestral fusions in the U.S.: Beethoven X Beyoncé and Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin X Queen). He is currently working on an album and film project with Moses Sumney, scoring two feature films, and developing multiple Broadway productions.

In 2023, Hackman launched his original music project, THE BRINK, an ambitious four-part, 300-minute work that blends genres as diverse as lyric opera, art-song cycles, conceptual hip-hop, and experimental electronica. Designed as an immersive and experiential piece, it features a hybrid ensemble incorporating strings, woodwinds, brass, synthesizers, multiple vocalists, bass, drums, guitar, piano, and keyboards, with Hackman himself conducting, playing, and singing. Chapters I & II debuted at underground performances in March and June of 2023.
