Director's Note
Directing Legally Blonde: The Musical has been an absolute daily dose of dopamine. Diving into this joyous story and wonderful music with this cast has been a pleasure.
So often growing up we are conditioned to think that life is type-cast. Lawyers, construction workers, nurses, homemakers, mechanics, plumbers, artists and waitstaff all seem to come with character descriptions that include gender, lifestyle, fashion, socio-economic backgrounds, education and breeding. What a tragedy that is, because some of the greatest stories of success are of people who broke out of their molds.
Think of Mary Jackson as she became the first female, African-American engineer at NASA in 1958; Benazir Bhutto emerging as the prime minister of Pakistan in 1988 making her the first female to govern a Muslim country; Maria Barra taking the reigns as CEO of General Motors and becoming the first female to act as the CEO of a major automaker in 2014; or Jodie Whittaker stepping out as the first woman to play the role of Dr. Who in 2017. History is bedazzled with stories of people who by being true to themselves and working with all their might, defied the status quo and became shining examples of what “possibility” means.
The greatest lesson that I think we can learn from Elle Woods is to be “serious” about being ourselves. Let the predictions and assumptions of others be their own baggage. Elle shows us that by always being true to ourselves we are on a journey to becoming all that we can be. In her words, we “find our way.”
Enjoy the show!
“There’s still so much to learn; so many dreams to earn. But even if I crash and burn ten times a day, I think I’m here to stay. I’m going to find my way.”
