Sarah Spitzer
Viola

Sarah Spitzer, a classical violist currently studying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, enlightens audiences with her rich tone and virtuosity.
After starting music lessons on piano at only age 4, she quickly took to the violin, eager to express her musical affinity. She has attended summer music intensives such as the National Symphony Orchestra's tuition-free Summer Music Institute and Kinhaven Music School's Senior Session, where she sat as concertmaster on pieces such as Respighi's Pines of Rome and Valerie Coleman's Seven O'Clock Shout. At Kinhaven she discovered the beautiful viola parts within a string quartet, which prompted her switch to this instrument.
After only a few months as a violist, she was admitted to the grammy-award winning New York Youth Symphony, where she performed in tri-annual concerts at Carnegie Hall, played standard repertoire such as Brahms 4th Symphony and Strauss' Death and Transfiguration, and premiered commissioned pieces specifically for the NYYS. Sarah was also part of a piano trio that was featured at Hoff Barthelson Music School's Spring Benefit Gala, performing alongside esteemed soloist Leila Josefowicz.
Sarah values frequent collaboration in ensembles. At Oberlin, she performed Brahms Sextet No. 1 at the semi-annual Chamberfest event. She has premiered works of composition students at Oberlin and was part of an EP project of a fellow Oberlin student. Sarah plans to continue honing her craft and exploring new ways to musically collaborate within the broader community.
