Tianyu Liu
Violin Soloist, 2025 SAI Concerto Competition Winner

Violinist Tianyu Liu joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as Section Violinist beginning September 2025, following his successful audition wins for both section violin and second principal positions in June 2025.

Liu's musical achievements span multiple continents and prestigious platforms. Recent victories include the Naftzger Young Artist Competition string division in Wichita, Kansas, and the Sigma Alpha Lota Competition at Chautauqua Institution. He was awarded first prize at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Performance String Competition and was selected as one of 22 global competitors for the prestigious Menuhin Competition in Richmond, Virginia. Liu advanced to the quarterfinals of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand and won the grand prize at the Ronald Sachs International Music Competition in North Carolina. Early in his career, he placed eighth in the Central China Television (CCTV) National Violin Competition at age 19.

Liu has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (Mendelssohn Violin Concerto) and the Wuhan Conservatory Orchestra (Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto). He made his American debut at Lincoln Center's Bruno Walter Auditorium performing the Waxman Carmen Fantasy. Notable collaborations include performing Handel-Halvorsen's Passacaglia for Two Violins with Lee-chin Siow at the 2014 Jinji Lake Arts Festival, presented by the Suzhou Arts and Cultural Center in China.

A native of Wuhan, China, he began his formal training at Wuhan Conservatory of Music's Middle School. Liu is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor under the guidance of Aaron Berofsky. He earned his Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School in the studio of Joseph Lin, where he was honored as a Kovner Fellowship recipient. Liu completed his undergraduate studies with Professor Lee-chin Siow at the College of Charleston.

As an active chamber musician, Liu has participated in prestigious festivals including the Juilliard School Chamber Festival, Taos School of Music, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Cremona International Music Festival.
