Alex Mullins is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. He’s currently a master’s student at the Bienen School of Music and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Texas. By age 14, Mullins began his orchestral studies outside of public school at the Webster University Community Music School. Mullins is also an alumnus of the St. Louis Youth Symphony Orchestra (SLYSO).
Mullins was recently selected as a winner in the 2022 American Trombone Workshop National Solo Competition, and the grand prize winner of the Susan Slaughter Solo Competition. Alex has also been chosen amongst three finalists to compete in the Edward Kleinhammer competition held by the International Trombone Association this summer. Outside of Orchestral playing, Mullins has also had several opportunities to perform jazz music. Mullins was a member of the 2018 Two O’Clock Lab Band, 2015 All National Honor Jazz Band, Jazz U St. Louis All-Stars and is an alum of the Summer Jazz Academy hosted by Wynton Marsalis. Although Mullins has studied under a large variety of notable trombonists over the years, his primary teachers are: Michael Mulcahy, Christopher Davis, Randy Hawes, Douglas Wright, Tony Baker, Matthew Frederickson, and Gerry Pagano.
