Andrew Chen

Andrew Chen, 21 years old, began studying the piano at age 8 with Dr. Frederick Kuok. In October 2014, Andrew won the second prize in the International Competition of Romantic Music 2014 and was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. In April 2015, Andrew also received the first prize in the 2015 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, and was subsequently invited to perform at Carnegie Hall again. In 2016, Andrew captured the second prize in both the New York Music Competition (April, 2016) and the 31st International Young Artist Piano Competition in Washington D.C. (June, 2016) and was invited to perform at Merkin Recital Hall. In 2017, Andrew won the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts Concerto Competition and performed the Tchaikovsky concerto with the LaGuardia Symphony Orchestra in the following year. In May, his chamber group was a winner of the 35th Annual Young Musicians Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Competition and was invited to perform at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center with his piano quintet. In July of 2018, he attended the Baltimore International Piano Festival and won first prize in the festival’s piano competition.

During the summers of 2019-2021 he attended the Chautauqua Institution Piano Festival, where he met and experienced many outstanding artists. In August 2019, Andrew won the grand prize of the 2019 Global Talent Show & Lincoln Center Awards Competition, and performed in Lincoln Center as a result. With a huge love for chamber music, Andrew is also currently established in the Genesee Piano Trio, formed in fall of 2019. Having won the chance to perform in the honors chamber recitals at Eastman numerous times, the Genesee Piano Trio has also recently claimed the 3rd Prize of the MTNA Chamber Music String Performance Competition in March of 2021. Having many wonderful festival experiences, he has taken masterclasses with esteemed pedagogues such as Peter Frankl, Gary Graffman, Boris Slutsky, Malcom Bilson and Jon Nakamatsu. Andrew is currently an undergraduate rising senior at the Eastman School of Music, where he studies with Alexander Kobrin.
