Son Duong, 18, is a pianist from Potomac, Maryland currently studying at the Eastman School of Music under Professor Douglas Humphreys. Past mentors have included Professors Yong Hi Moon and Dang Thai Son. Son has competed in prominent piano competitions such as the International e-piano Competition (2021) and Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition (2020). Recently, he won the Marian Garcia International Piano Competition (2021), was named a YoungArts Winner (2022), and was awarded the National Fryderyk Chopin Foundation Scholarship (2021). Son has also been featured on NPR's From The Top show and broadcast on Vietnamese radio. During the summers, Son has attended Bowdoin International Music Festival and Orford International Music Festival, where he enjoyed playing chamber music and listening to concerts. Son has had masterclasses with Matti Raekallio, Julian Martin, Veda Kaplinsky, André Laplante, Ronan O’ Hora, and Anton Nel among others. Son enjoys helping his community, and has previously organized a concert initiative during Covid-19 to raise funds for disadvantaged children. He has also performed at multiple senior homes around his area and given lessons across his hometown for kids. During his free time, Son enjoys reading books, playing table tennis, and traveling the world.
Son is the recipient of the Chautauqua Women's Club Ellen and J Marcus Fultz Scholarship “In Memory of Arline W. Bernstein”, The Dorothy M. Jackson Memorial Scholarship in Piano, and the Eleanor B. Daugherty Scholarship Fund.
