Miriam Koby is a 2024 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, where she studied with David Bowlin. Previous violin teachers include Stephen Sims (2018-2020) and Hristo Popov (2009-2018). At Oberlin, Miriam was a recipient of the Conservatory Dean’s Scholarship as well as the Marshal F. Bryant and Charlotte Kemsies Scholarships. In May 2024 she was selected to perform in the Oberlin Commencement Recital, representing the senior class.
Miriam has served as concertmaster/section leader in many ensembles, including the Oberlin Orchestra, Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, Kaboom Studio Orchestra, Contemporary Youth Orchestra, and Akron Youth Symphony. She was invited to travel twice to Carnegie Hall with the Oberlin Orchestra, including serving as assistant principal. Other honors Miriam has received include Ohio state representative in the Music Teachers National Association Senior String Competition (2018) and winner of the Akron Youth Symphony Concerto Competition (2018). Miriam has attended many summer festivals, including Casalmaggiore International Music Festival (Italy), Texas Music Festival, and Chautauqua.
This fall, Miriam will be attending the University of Maryland to pursue a Masters of Music degree, studying with David Salness. Outside of classical violin, Miriam has also studied in the areas of baroque violin, fiddle, improvisation, music theory, conducting, and pedagogy, and hopes to have a career rich with performances and teaching.
