John Woodward
Double Bass

John Woodward is a double bassist studying with Jeffrey Turner in the Performer's Diploma - Orchestral Studies program at Indiana University. Originally from Fresno, California, he completed his master’s at Bard College Conservatory in 2024, studying under Jeremy McCoy, and his bachelors at Indiana University in 2022, studying under Kurt Muroki. During his undergraduate, Woodward participated in various opera, orchestra and ballet productions, under conductors such as Arthur Fagen and Thomas Wilkins, as well as premiering many pieces of new music by contemporary composers. Over summers, he participated in the programs such as the Round Top Music Festival and the FOOSA summer orchestra festival, studying with teachers such as James VanDemark, Brett Shurtliffe, Bruce Bransby and Peter Lloyd. An avid chamber player, Woodward has organized and performed many of the major works for the bass, including the Beethoven Septet, Schubert “Trout” quintet, and Shostakovich Octet. In 2022, he was a guest performer with the Da Capo chamber players, and in 2023 bassist for the Bard Kurtag Festival’s performance of “Messages of the Late Miss R.V. Troussova.” He has also been the head bass instructor at Fresno County’s Sequoia Lake Music Camp since 2018, and an assistant for FOOSA’s half-day program in 2019. In addition to playing classical bass, some of his other musical pursuits include jazz studies and playing trumpet.
