Among compositions written during the COVID-19 pandemic for livestreamed performances, Alone Together for percussion, harp and strings by John Wineglass has made a successful transition into the live concert medium and enjoyed numerous performances in the last two years. Its manifold orchestral colors and engaging melodies projected hope and strength at the time when music-lovers, and the world at large, needed it more than ever.
John Wineglass has received many accolades for his work in film and television, but he is also prolific as a concert composer. Alone Together was co-commissioned by four California orchestras (San José Chamber Orchestra, Fresno Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony and Monterey Symphony) and first performed—online—by Carl St. Clair and the Pacific Symphony on May 25, 2021, the first anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. It is a work that wears its emotions very much on its sleeve. As the world is in the throes of one crisis after another, Wineglass’s piece projects a message of hope that gets stronger with every new hearing.
