ACT ONE
The story opens in the foyer of the Silberhaus home. Clara and Fritz are anxiously waiting to begin the holiday festivities. Their cook has prepared many beautiful desserts from all over the world, and friends will be arriving soon.
One of their guests is a relative they haven’t met yet. He is their wonderfully charming and magical Uncle Drosselmeyer.
The party finally gets under way with dancing for both parents and children. Uncle Drosselmeyer brings very special gifts to the party, such as beautiful large dolls that he magically commands to dance. However, the most enchanting gift he brings is a doll called the Nutcracker. Clara immediately falls in love with it. Fritz becomes a tad jealous and tries to snatch the Nutcracker from Clara but instead accidentally drops it.
Drosselmeyer is there to quickly mend the broken doll, to Clara’s surprise. After the guests depart, it is time for the Silberhaus family to retire. Clara would desperately love to take her Nutcracker to bed with her, but Mother and Father suggest that she keep it under the tree.
During the night, Clara sneaks out of bed to retrieve her Nutcracker, but while she is near the tree the grandfather clock strikes 12, scaring her. All of a sudden the living room is filled with rats. She is frightened and jumps onto a chair for refuge. Magically, Drosselmeyer appears and dismisses the rats. The house suddenly begins to grow and change shape. Clara is in awe of the new surroundings. To her amazement, Fritz’s toy soldiers appear from the giant tree and take up battle with the rats, which are now being led by a Rat King. To come to her defense, her beloved Nutcracker, who has become lifelike, battles the Rat King. Just when it looks as though the Nutcracker is about to be defeated, Clara throws her slipper, striking the Rat King dead. As he is being dragged away, Clara turns to see that the Nutcracker has transformed and Drosselmeyer is there to lead them on an adventurous journey.
Through the large doors and into the snow forest, Clara, the Nutcracker and Uncle Drosselmeyer are met by the Snow King and Queen. There they experience the wonders of the winter snow. The Snow King and Queen present them with a beautiful sled, and Drosselmeyer sends them off to continue their exciting journey to the Land of Sweets.
ACT TWO
As Clara and the Nutcracker arrive in the Land of Sweets, they are met by the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy, her Cavalier and their Attendants. Each Attendant holds a flag that represents all the delicious desserts of the kingdom. After hearing about Clara and the Nutcracker’s adventures with the Rat King, the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier ask them to be their guests. Each of the spectacular divertissements awards them with a beautiful dessert and a dance. Clara and the Nutcracker meet so many wonderful people. As the evening draws to an end, Drosselmeyer appears. This magical journey is like a dream — when she opens her eyes, she finds herself back at home. She wonders about her unusual Uncle Drosselmeyer.
Was his magic a part of this fantasy, or was it all a dream?
Resumen
Primer acto
La historia empieza en la entrada del hogar Seberhaus. Clara y Fritz están esperando ansiosos el comienzo de las festividades navideñas. Su cocinera ha preparado una cantidad de hermosos postres de alrededor del mundo, y sus amigos llegarán pronto. Uno de los invitados es un familiar que no han conocido aún. Él es el maravillosamente encantador tío Drosselmeyer. La fiesta finalmente da inicio con los padres e hijos bailando. El tío Drosselmeyer ha traído a la fiesta unos regalos únicos, como unas hermosas muñecas a quienes él mágicamente comanda a bailar. Sin embargo, el regalo más hermoso que presenta es el muñeco cascanueces. Clara se enamora de éste inmediatamente.
Fritz se pone celoso y trata de quitarle el Cascanueces a Clara pero sin querer lo suelta. Para la sorpresa de Clara, El tío Drosselmeyer está presente para reparar rápidamente el muñeco. Después que los invitados se marchan, es el momento para que la familia Silberhaus se retire. Clara va a tomar el Cascanueces a la cama con ella, pero su Madre y Padre le sugieren que lo deje debajo del árbol.
Entrada la noche, Clara se levanta y a hurtadillas toma su Cascanueces, pero mientras ella está cerca del árbol, el gran reloj marca las 12 asustándola. De repente, la sala se llena de ratas. Ella está asustada y brinca arriba de una silla para protegerse. Mágicamente, el tío Drosselmeyer aparece y espanta a las ratas. Para la sorpresa de Clara, todo dentro de la casa crece y cambia de forma. Con sorpresa, Clara ve aparecer a los soldados de juguete de Fritz del árbol gigante, éstos pelean con las ratas dirigidas por el malvado Rey Rata. El querido Cascanueces vuelve a la vida para defenderla y para pelear contra el Rey Rata.
Cuando parece que el Cascanueces va a ser derrotado, Clara le avienta su pantufla al Rey Rata, golpeándole en la cabeza. Mientras lo arrastran, Clara se voltea para ver que su Cascanueces se ha transformado, y Drosselmeyer aparece y los dirige a través de las enormes puertas y hacia el hermoso y nevado bosque. Clara, el Cascanueces y el tío Drosselmeyer conocen al Rey y la Reina de la Nieve, además de experimentar las maravillas de la nieve invernal. El Rey y la Reina les hacen entrega de un hermoso trineo, y el tío Drosselmeyer envía a Clara y al Cascanueces a continuar su fascinante travesía en la Tierra de los Caramelos.
Segundo Acto
Una vez que Clara y el Cascanueces llegaron a la Tierra de los Caramelos, la hermosa Hada de Azúcar los encuentra al igual que a sus asistentes. Cada asistente sostiene una bandera que representa a todos los reinos de los Postres Deliciosos. Después de escuchar las aventuras de Clara y el Cascanueces con el Rey Rata, el Hada de Azúcar y el Caballero les invitan. Cada entretenimiento espectacular es recompensado con un postre hermoso y un baile. Clara y el Cascanueces conocen a muchas personas maravillosas. Cuando la noche empieza a finalizar, el tío Drosselmeyer aparece. Esta jornada mágica es como un sueño - cuando ella abre los ojos, se encuentra en casa. Ella se pregunta acerca de su extraordinario tío Drosselmeyer. ¿Era su magia parte de la fantasía, o era solo un sueño?
