Rony Barrak
Darbouka

Internationally renowned Lebanese percussionist and composer Rony Barrak held his Darbouka (Middle Eastern Tabla) at the tender age of four and began playing it intuitively. Led by early self-confidence, he made his first TV performance at the age of seven and then proceeded to improve his skills through school and family performances.

Rony started his first music studies at the age of sixteen, at Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (Music School department) in Lebanon. After winning a 1988 Gold Medal in a competition on LBCI television for talented young musicians in Lebanon and the Middle East, Barrak was inspired and consistently demonstrated a strong rapport with worldwide audiences to unleash the Darbouka from the chains of its long-standing traditional context and explore its full potential.

Rony has produced his own unique sound, identity, technique and style, introducing his special instrument to the west with a different concept and approach. His love for Darbouka, including various percussion instruments, has led him to perform various genres from traditional Arabic folk music to Classical music, Jazz, Flamenco, Latin, and world music.
