Damien Geter (B. 1980)
Sinfonia Americana

Damien Geter is an American composer, conductor, bass-baritone soloist, and podcast host. His rapidly growing body of compositions includes chamber, vocal, orchestral, and full operatic works.

Geter’s works are informed by classical tradition while often incorporating jazz, gospel, and rhythm and blues. “I’m a product of all those things, just as much as I am product of Beethoven,” Geter has said.

Geter describes Sinfonia Americana as an exploration of what might constitute “the American sound” — not as a fixed style, but as a living, evolving musical identity shaped by history, culture and personal voice.

The 15-minute work was commissioned by the Richmond Symphony and unfolds in two main sections with a recap that ties together its central ideas.

Rather than quoting from American music of the past, Geter builds an original musical language that reflects the diversity of American traditions. The result is a score that blends symphonic sweep with propulsive energy and flexible stylistic shifts.

The piece opens with melodic fragments that recur throughout the composition, constantly reshaped by changing harmonies, textures and rhythmic settings. These themes act “like a chameleon,” adapting to new musical surroundings as the work progresses. The structure allows Geter to move between contrasting moods — from lyrical and spacious to rhythmically driven — while maintaining unity through the returning material.

In Sinfonia Americana, Geter presents America not as a single sound but as a collage of influences. The music’s shifting sonorities, layered rhythms and evolving themes suggest a nation defined by plurality and restless motion. By combining traditional orchestral writing with contemporary rhythmic vitality, the work offers a vibrant, modern portrait of American musical identity.
