Undisputed as the sole creator of Go-Go music, Chuck Brown’s signature style earned him a place in music history. Inspired by James Brown, he combined his love of blues, jazz, soul, gospel, and African rhythms to create his distinctive sound. The music got its name because as the Baltimore Sun says, “The go-go beats begin and don’t quite until the set’s end,” meaning the music just keeps GO-ing and GO-ing.
His first hit came in 1972 with his debut album, “We the People” leading him to perform for audiences around the country. He found inspiration in his next hit, “We Need Some Money,” propelling him on tour around the world.
In 2006, Chuck Brown was awarded a Lifetime Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor for folk and traditional arts given by the Federal Government. The following year, his album, “We’re About The Business” debuted as the No. 1 Independent album and No. 2 R&B album on Billboard. Sadly, Chuck Brown passed away in 2012, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be celebrated today. The Chuck Brown Band is made up of eleven members who tour the world keeping the beat and his legacy alive.
