Galop
Dmitri Shostakovich, trans. Donald Hunsberger

Originally composed for the operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki (1958), Dmitri Shostakovich’s Galop is a whirlwind of energy, capturing a playful, almost chaotic spirit. Transcribed by Donald Hunsberger, this version for wind ensemble launches tonight’s concert with the pure exhilaration of a spark catching fire.

Just as an engine roars to life or a match flares into flame, Galop sets everything into motion with breakneck speed, cascading notes, and relentless forward drive. This opening number captures the thrill of new beginnings—frenzied, joyful, and alive with possibilities—as we ignite the journey of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble.
