Webb Madrigal Singers
Webb School of Knoxville’s Madrigal Singers are part of the school’s strong tradition of excellence in the choral performing arts. Webb’s Madrigal Singers, wearing elaborate costumes of the Renaissance era, traditionally sing for Madrigal Dinners during the holiday season. As a service to the community, the Madrigal performers sing at a number of different venues annually during the holidays. Each year we have from 15 to 20 performances lined up for the Holidays.
Webb’s Madrigal Singers is a highly select and auditioned group of 32 performers, consisting of 10th through 12th grade students. The Singers participate in a national competition every other spring, singing a repertoire of various music genres. Students in the music program have sung with the Knoxville Opera Company and with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. They also perform at several locations around the country, including Washington D.C.; Orlando, FL; New York City; and in Europe with the Tennessee Ambassadors of Music.
The director of Webb School of Knoxville’s Madrigal Singers is LeAnne Johnson, now in her 13th year of teaching choral music at Webb School and 29th year teaching music. Johnson graduated from the University of Tennessee in Vocal Performance, Master’s at Carson Newman, and EdS at LMU; previously performed at Dollywood, Knoxville Opera Company, and other community groups. Jean Helbig is chair of the arts department at Webb. She is also assistant choral director and accompanist and has taught at Webb School for 30 years. Additionally, Mrs. Helbig teaches private piano classes and is the accompanist at Robertsville Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, TN.
