Windowpane Quilt

By Connie Evans

I found this panel while on vacation in 1000 Islands, New York. It reminded me so much of where I grew up in the country in the Finger Lakes area of New York state.

Across the street from our old house in the Village of Freeville was the Mill Pond, an area created by an old dam once used to power an equally old mill. The pond was our place to skate in the winter, and search for frogs and tad poles in the summer. It was also my father’s place to relax and fish whenever he had a chance.

Money was tight in the 40’s and 50’s, so a successful fishing outing meant fresh fish on the table for supper. Delicious fish dipped in egg and cracker crumbs, and fried crisp to a golden brown. The colors and images on the panel bring to mind favorite memories of my childhood. It is relaxing to just sit and view the scene through the “window."
