Nicky Sohn
composer

Selected as one of the "Cool 100” by Houston CityBook Magazine, alongside icons such as Simone Biles and Megan Thee Stallion, composer Nicky Sohn is a versatile and in-demand voice in contemporary classical music. Known for a distinctive, jazz-influenced, rhythmically driven style, her work has been praised internationally as “undoubtedly the crowd pleaser of the evening” (YourObserver), “dynamic and full of vitality” (The Korea Defense Daily), featuring “colorful orchestration” (NewsBrite), and evoking “elegant wonder” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung).

Sohn has received commissions and performances from leading institutions including the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Minnesota Orchestra, Annapolis Symphony, Albany Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, and the National Orchestra of Korea. Her music has also been featured by the New York Choreographic Institute, Stuttgart Ballet, and Dogs of Desire, reflecting a broad artistic range across orchestral, vocal, ballet, and socially engaged projects.

A passionate advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration, Sohn describes herself as “obsessed with the collaborative aspects” of creating music. This philosophy is exemplified in her violin concerto commissioned by Kinetic Ensemble and violinist Mary Grace Johnson in partnership with The Women’s Home in Houston, a project amplifying the voices of women overcoming addiction and homelessness.

Recent highlights include the premiere of her guitar concerto with the Albany Symphony featuring guitarist Bokyung Byun, earning rave reviews and sold-out performances, with a chamber version scheduled for the 2025 Tanglewood Music Festival. Additional projects include "Galaxy Back to You," commissioned for the Balourdet Quartet following their Avery Fisher Career Grant, and a large-scale ballet for BalletCollective in collaboration with choreographer Alysa Pires and visual artist Linn Meyers. Sohn is also composing a new concert opener for the Atlanta Symphony.

Sohn has held fellowships at Tanglewood, DACAMERA, MUSIQA Houston, the Hambidge Center, and the UCross Foundation, and is a recipient of the Druckman Prize. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, a Master of Music from The Juilliard School, and a Bachelor of Music from Mannes College of Music.
