Originally from Guatemala, Ricardo Asturias discovered a love of sewing at age six, when his mother first taught him the craft. After moving to Los Angeles at 14, he helped in his mother’s fabric shop and, by 18, had opened a clothing boutique near Melrose Avenue. While working at the historic Wiltern Theatre, a chance encounter with Miami City Ballet brought him to Miami—and 32 seasons later, he remains an essential part of the Company’s foundation.
As Wardrobe Master, Pico oversees the care, organization and maintenance of MCB’s vast costume inventory, which spans more than 300 ballets. From fittings, pointe shoes and quick changes to laundry, repairs and backstage logistics, he ensures every dancer feels comfortable, confident and ready to perform. Among the works closest to his heart are Western Symphony, whose costumes were being built when he arrived, and Serenade, which he considers one of the most beautiful ballets in the repertoire.
