Helen Ruiz was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After being accepted into Julian E. Blanco Ballet School at the age of 10, world-renowned ballet and Pilates instructor Lolita San Miguel offered her a full scholarship to the Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico. After two years with Ballet Concierto, at the age of 12, Ruiz was accepted into the School of American Ballet’s summer program, which she attended for three consecutive summers. At the age of 15, she was offered a full scholarship to attend SAB’s year-round program, where she trained for four years. In 2007, she auditioned for Miami City Ballet and was offered an apprenticeship under the direction of Edward Villella. Ruiz was promoted to corps de ballet member in 2009.
