Damon Gupton
Conductor

Damon Gupton is the first-ever principal guest conductor of the Cincinnati Pops. A native of Detroit, he served as American Conducting Fellow of the Houston Symphony and assistant conductor of the Kansas City Symphony. His conducting appearances include the Boston Pops; the Orchestra of St. Luke’s; the Detroit, San Francisco, Atlanta, Baltimore, National, and St. Louis symphonies; the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo; and the Sphinx Symphony. He led the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra on two national tours with performances at Carnegie Hall and conducted the finals of the Seventh Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition and the 2021 Classic FM Live at Royal Albert Hall concert with the Chineke! Orchestra. Other musical collaborations include work with Marcus Miller, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Common, Leslie Odom Jr., Byron Stripling, and Massamba Diop. He made his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in 2023.

Mr. Gupton has been featured as a narrator in many performances, including Wynton Marsalis’s The Ever Fonky Lowdown with Juilliard Jazz, as well as performances with the Cleveland Orchestra; the Grand Teton and Grant Park music festivals; the Detroit, Colorado, Houston, and Memphis symphonies; and the Cincinnati Pops. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Michigan. He studied conducting with David Zinman and Murry Sidlin at the Aspen Music Festival and with Leonard Slatkin at the National Conducting Institute in Washington, DC. 

Mr. Gupton is a graduate of the Drama Division of the Juilliard School and has had regular roles on the series The Big Door Prize, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Black Lightning, Criminal Minds, The Player, The Divide, Prime Suspect, Deadline, Strange Brew, and Finkleman. He appears in the upcoming Rex Lear with Al Pacino, as well as the Academy Award–winning films Whiplash and La La Land. His stage roles include the Broadway production of the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning Clybourne Park, for which Mr. Gupton received an AUDELCO nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
