Jonathan Coopersmith

Philadelphia Chorale Artistic Director Jonathan Coopersmith is a highly regarded teacher, conductor, and lecturer on music theory and analysis, music history, and music’s relationship to well-being. He served as chair of Musical Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music from 2010 until 2025 after joining the faculty in 2004. A native of Princeton, New Jersey, and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Mannes College of Music, he served as associate conductor of the Philadelphia Singers for 12 years, artistic director of Nashirah for seven years, and as a guest chorus director of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Pennsylvania Ballet. He has prepared choral ensembles for performances with Andrea Bocelli and the Philly POPS, as well as for internationally acclaimed conductors Simon Rattle, John Adams, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Since 2015, Mr. Coopersmith has been the festival host and a guest conductor at the Music from Angel Fire chamber music festival. In addition he has been a regular guest lecturer in the Masters of Applied Positive Psychology program at the University of Pennsylvania, speaking about music and well-being.
