ERIC CONWAY
Conductor and Director of the Morgan State University Choir

Since 2004 Eric Conway has served as director of the Morgan State University Choir as well as chair of the Fine and Performing Arts Department. He has travelled all over the world, directing the choir in the Czech Republic, Ghana, China, Russia, Brazil, Australia, South Africa, and Colombia, among others. Prior to serving as director, he was principal accompanist for the Choir for over 20 years.

Mr. Conway received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he majored in piano performance and minored in conducting. While at Peabody he was a recipient of the Liberace Scholarship, as well as a winner in the Yale Gordon Concerto Competition. As a pianist he toured Eastern Africa, sponsored by the United States Information Agency. He has performed as soloist with several orchestras including the Baltimore and Johns Hopkins symphonies; the Baltimore Chamber, Georgetown University, and Millbrook orchestras; and Baltimore Concert Artists. He has worked with such artists as Trevor Wye, Hilary Hahn, Daniel Heifetz, William Brown, and Janice Chandler. He was also an orchestral pianist for the Baltimore Symphony from 1993 to 2004.

Mr. Conway’s choral accomplishments include working closely with some of the greatest conductors of the 20th century including Robert Shaw, Neville Marriner, and Donald Neuen. In 2001 he was chorusmaster for the Baltimore Symphony Chorus’s performance of the Verdi Requiem. He gives choral masterclasses and workshops for collegiate and high school levels around the mid-Atlantic area. In 2006 he was chorusmaster for Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, which ended the tenure of the Baltimore Symphony Music Director Yuri Temirkanov.

In 2015 he was asked by Aretha Franklin to conduct a choir to accompany her in her performance for Pope Francis during his visit to the United States. That same year he conducted the Baltimore Symphony in a Holiday Christmas Concert with the Morgan Choir. Mr. Conway also holds degrees in accounting and business management. He was a member of the Maryland State Arts Council from 2012 to 2015.
