Andy McGraw

Andy McGraw is a Professor and Chair of Music at the University of Richmond in Virginia. He has written two monographs: Radical Traditions: Reimagining Culture in Balinese Experimental Music (Oxford 2013) and Music as Ethics (Oxford 2023); and has co-edited two volumes on Indonesian music: Performing Indonesia, with Sumarsam (Smithsonian 2014) and Sounding Out the State of Indonesian Music, with Chris Miller (Cornell 2022). He has published numerous articles on music and ethics as well as analytical pieces on rhythm in Balinese, Javanese, and Cuban musics. In Richmond he facilitates community gamelan and kroncong ensembles, and runs a music program in the Virginia prison system. 

His research and performance activities has been underwritten by grants and support from: Fulbright, National Endowment for the Humanities, MidAtlantic Arts Foundation, Indonesian Department of Culture and Education, Smithsonian Institution, VFIC, University of Richmond. 

His performances and compositions have been published by the Tzadik, Porter, Sargasso, Out of Your Head, and New Amsterdam labels. His recent creative activities have involved collaborations with leading performers and composers from Indonesia, primarily the Javanese composer Peni Candra Rini. His co-arrangements of her compositions have been performed by the Kronos quartet at Carnegie Hall and on prestigious stages across Europe and America. His experimental performances with Rini have been programmed at small DIY spaces and festivals including the Edinburgh International Festival, Big Ears, the Gaudeamus Festival, and the Monheim Triennale.
