Full of Noises (ensemble and electronics), 9'

Full of Noises takes its name from the Caliban’s third act speech in The Tempest where he describes the sonic wonders of the island: “Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises, Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.” The piece leans into the idea of blurring the space between “music” and “noise” (a term that has a complicated history). A recording of a lively soundscape of Cairo at dusk runs throughout the piece variously in the foreground or as part of the texture. The ensemble takes its cue from the recording – sometimes getting its notes and harmonies from sounds in the environment, and at other times joining the breathing, clanking, clicking, and twangling of the recorded cityscape.
