Courtney Elkin Mohler (Santa Barbara Chumash) is Associate Professor and Chair of the Theatre Department at Boston College where she directs plays for the department and teaches classes in theatre history, dramatic literature and criticism and directing. Among Courtney’s favorite classes to teach are: “It’s Not a Moment, It’s a Movement: BIPOC Plays for the 21st Century,” “Native American Theatre,” and the Directing sequence for BC Theatre.
Specializing in Native American Theater and Performance Studies, she has published articles in Theatre Topics, Modern Drama, Text and Presentation, Platform, and Ecumenica, and has contributed chapters to numerous edited anthologies. She co-authored Critical Companion to Native American and First Nations Theatre and Performance: Indigenous Spaces (Bloomsbury-Methuen, 2020) and co-edited the Methuen Anthology of Native American Plays: Indigenous Spaces (Bloomsbury-Methuen, 2026).
As a stage director and dramaturg, Courtney Elkin Mohler concentrates on new works that push aesthetic and political boundaries and is dedicated to supporting new work by Native American playwrights. Some recent production dramaturgy credits include Pure Native by Vickie Ramirez (Tuscarora) at Geva Theatre, The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa FastHorse at the Virginia Stage Company. As development dramaturg, Courtney supported the world premieres of Bad Medicine by P.C. Verrone at Santa Fe Playhouse, Desert Stories for Lost Girls by Lily Rushing at the Latino Theatre Company in Los Angeles, Antíkoni by Beth Piatote (Nez Perce) at Native Voices, and Yu-Che-Wah-Kehn (Bitter) by Vickie Ramirez (Tuscarora), recipient of the National New Play Network’s Smith Prize for Political Theatre.
