Three Songs by Carlos Guastavino

“El clavel del aire blanco”

El clavel del aire blanco
Es suspiro detenido,
Que en el aire se hace flor
Con el perfume más fino.

¡Ay, amor! ¡Ay, amor!
La flor en la niña
La flor en la niña
La niña en la flor

Del clavel del aire blanco
Nadie ofenda su blancura,
Porque tiene el parecer
De la inocencia más pura.

¡Ay, amor! ¡Ay, amor!
La flor en la niña
La flor en la niña
La niña en la flor

-- León Benarós (1915-2012)

“The Carnation from the White Air”

The carnation from the white air

is a sigh suspended

that in the air becomes a flower

with the finest perfume.

Ah love, ah love!

The flower in the girl,

the flower in the girl,

the girl in the flower.

Of the carnation of the white air

no one offends her whiteness,

because she has the appearance

Of the innocence most pure.

Ah love, ah love!

The flower in the girl,

the flower in the girl,

the girl in the flower.

-- English translation by Alice Del Simone

“Bonita rama de sauce”

Bonita rama de sauce,
bonita rama de amor,
nunca floreció, que siempre
se quedó diciendo adiós.

El río pasa y la peina,
el río la jura amar.
La rama le da sus trenzas.
El río miente y se va.

El viento pasa y la besa,
el tallo le hace cimbrar,
toda la ramita canta,
el viento miente y se va.

Se va, se va,
y la ramita se inclina,
no la vean suspirar.

Bonita rama de sauce,
bonita rama de amor,
florecida de alegría
con el alba amaneció.

Debajo de su caricia
dormido estaba el cantor,
de la guitarra y la boca
le latía una canción.

Más dulce que viento y río,
la noche entera cantó,
coronado por la rama,
abrazadito quedó.

Cantar, cantar,
las verdes coplas del sauce,
altas por el cielo van.

-- Arturo Vásquez Cey (1888-1958)

“Beautiful Willow Branch”

Beautiful willow branch,

beautiful branch of love.

That never bloomed,

that was always left saying goodbye.

The river passes by and combs her hair.

The river swears to love her.

The branch gives him her braids.

The river tells lies and is gone.

The wind passes and kisses her, making her stem sway.

All of the little branch sings.

The wind tells lies and is gone.

It’s gone, it’s gone.

And the little branch bends

so they won’t see her sobbing.

Beautiful willow branch,

beautiful branch of love.

Blooming with joy

she awakened with the dawn.

Under her caresses

the singers was sleeping.

From his guitar and his lips

pulses a song.

Sweeter than the wind and the river

the entire night he sang.

Crowned by the branch

he was embraced.

To sing, to sing.

The green verses of the willow

rise high up to the sky.

-- English translation by Alice Del Simone

“La rosa y el sauce”

La rosa se iba abriendo
Abrazada al sauce,
El árbol apasionada,
La amaba tanto!

Pero una niña, una niña coqueta

Pero una niña, una niña coqueta

Se la ha robado

Y el sauce desconsolado

La está llorando.

La está llorando.

-- Francisco Silva y Valdés (1873-1940)

“The Rose and the Willow”

The rose was beginning to open

Embracing the willow tree.

The tree passionately,

Passionately loved her so much.

But a girl, a coquettish little girl,

But a girl, a coquettish little girl,

Has stolen the rose.

And the disconsolate willow

Is crying for her.

Is crying for her.

-- English translation by Alice Del Simone
