Josephine Mellowes
Winner, 2025 Chamber Flute Ensemble Concerto Competition

Josephine Mellowes first learned to play the flute at at time when blowing into the instrument was especially hard. Like many 6 year olds, she had lost her front teeth, but that didn't stop her from learning to make beautiful sounds with the instrument. Now, nine years later, Jo is a freshman at the University School of Milwaukee and remains as passionate about the flute as she did then. After four years of flute lessons, Jo participated in her middle school band as a percussionist. Only after three years of middle school and a chance encounter with her band teacher at the annual Solo & Ensemble competition was her ability to play the flute fully discovered. With Dr. Shuler's encouragement, Jo auditioned for MYSO, and for the past two years she has played in the Chamber Flute Ensemble while also playing percussion in MYSO's Wind Ensemble and Philharmonia.
