Gabrielle Peck
Fellow, John Downey Creation Project

Gabrielle Peck is a 12th grader attending the Wisconsin Virtual Academy. Gabby began studying cello at the age of eight with Rosa Borisova and currently studies with Ravenna Helson. In addition to the cello, she studies piano and Bayan accordion with world-renowned accordionist Stas Venglevski. This is her 9th year in MYSO, and she is proud to sit as one of the principal cellists in Senior Symphony this year.

Gabrielle’s interest in composition began when she was four years old, where she was inspired by an Egyptian exhibit at the Milwaukee Public Museum and wrote her first piece, The Pretty Song. Since then she has composed, arranged, and premiered many more pieces, including The Mischievous Geese, premiered by MYSO’s Philharmonia orchestra in 2022, Main Street Swing, premiered by MYSO’s Chamber Flute Ensemble in 2023, Windblown, premiered by the Houston Accordion Orchestra in January 2024--and given a second performance in Hadano, Japan, in June of 2024, Dance of the Phoenix, premiered by MYSO’s Senior Symphony in 2024, and Daydreaming, premiered by the Houston Accordion Orchestra in January of 2025.

My Star in the Night Sky is based on a short poem written by Gabby in early 2024, about her perpetual wish to rekindle old friendships. The poem is as follows:

My star in the night sky

How brightly you shine up high!
But when the sun comes up
You leave without a goodbye.

How I mourn when you leave me!
How I search far and wide
For someone or something
Who does nothing but hide.

My star in the night sky
How lovely it is when you come back!
But you never seem to stay for very long at all.

It seems as though you're falling
Far away from me!
I shout for you but you never answer my call.

Those last rays of daylight
We sought refuge in
Are all but dissipated,
Bordering on thin.

I guess that this morning
My chase has come to an end.
But when the moon rises
I will find you once again.
