What inspired you to start playing and making music?

I started playing flute when I was allowed to join the school band in fourth grade, which seemed like an interesting opportunity at the time. I think I stuck with it because of all the different ensembles and repertoire that became available to me as I advanced.

What do you love most about music/performing with an orchestra?

I love contributing to something bigger than myself. Orchestral works are inherently ordered toward an increase of beauty in the world, and I admire the constant, non-verbal communication among all the musicians in an orchestra.

What are your plans/goals for after high school? How is music/participation in an orchestra helping you reach your goals (these can be musical or nonmusical goals)?

After high school, I hope to pursue a double-major in flute performance and math. I am grateful for the opportunity to play in orchestra because it has allowed me to learn from extremely talented peers, and it has definitely helped me to become a better musician because it requires adjustment to a communal musical setting as opposed to my regular solo performance. Over the years, I’ve also grown to appreciate the subtleties and order that are only seen in written music, but ultimately produce a unique experience for both musicians and audiences. This appreciation has led me to a deep respect of logic and our ability to express ideas in writing, which applies to both music and math.

What is your favorite ASYO memory?

My favorite ASYO memories are the side-by-side concerts with the ASO. It was a blessing to play alongside professional musicians and learn from their experience with the works we performed.
