Edvard Grieg
Suite No. 1 from Peer Gynt

Grieg’s Suite No. 1 is comprised of incidental music from Henrik Ibsen’s play, Peer Gynt. The suite pulls four movements from the original 28 that accompanied the play. In “Morning Mood”, we hear the gentle lilting of the famed flute solo, depicting sunrise as the titular hero makes a woodwind instrument out of reeds while observing nature. In “Åse’s Death”, Grieg uses mournful melodies and long lyrical lines to depict Gynt’s grief at his mother’s passing. Later, in a case of mistaken identity, Gynt is seduced by a Bedouin chieftain’s daughter in “Anitra’s Dance”. Finally, in “Hall of the Mountain King” Grieg uses driving rhythmic pulsation and thrilling repetitive melodies to depict Gynt’s adventures in a cave filled with all manners of mythical creatures.
