World premiere "Ancient Echoes" by Colorado composer Michael Udow is a real 'made in Longmont' story. Inspired by Longmont-based archaeologist Marilyn Martorano's 2013 discovery of a set of ancient lithophones (a sort of xylophone made of stones), Longmont-based composer Michael Udow wrote music for orchestra and a replica of these instruments to celebrate the musical connection we have with the people who lived here 6,000 years ago.
Every creation has to start from something, but what? A single idea or inspiration can act like a seed which sprouts and grows into something larger and more complex. The question is where does that seed come from? Have some fun with your friends or family exploring the compositional process!
??Brainstorming for inspiration -
First, brainstorm some things in life that are inspiring - role models, nature, an act of heroism, etc. - and jot these down as you go. Once you’ve listed a few, choose only two or three descriptive words that capture the essence of each inspiration. Now that your creative brains are “oiled” you may be finding it difficult to contain these descriptions to only a few words. The seed is growing!
??Turning inspiration into music -
Divide into small groups, assigning each an inspiration from the list. Ask each group to come up with musical choices which convey their ideas. What character or attitude will the music have? Is it necessary to have a soloist? What kind of melody or rhythms seem suitable? Be as imaginative and detailed with your choices. Also, it’s important to try out some of these ideas as they come up. What if something seems like a good idea but doesn’t work so nicely in context? Back to the drawing board!
?✍Developing a good idea -
By now you might have a strong concept of your inspiration piece. The trick is making it last a while. Examine some of your ideas and come up with solutions for developing them into something longer or more complex. Remember the simple answers are often the most rewarding. For instance, simply repeat the main idea or melody! Try different combinations of instruments. Have fun with silence! There are infinite possibilities. Make a goal of doubling the amount of your previous material. If possible, perform these pieces by singing, clapping, or using musical instruments. Follow this with some discussion of each group’s creative solutions.
?Listening -
Ancient Echoes is “hot off the press” having its World Premiere on April 23, 2022. Michael Udow has been composing music for much of his life, but still goes through a process similar to the above each time. As you listen, try focusing on thematic material in this piece and how it is developed. How might engaging in the compositional process activities above enhance your general listening experience?
