Jonathan Mikell Smith has appeared around the country in comic roles with companies such as Opera Birmingham, The Atlanta Opera, Cedar Rapids Opera, Gulf Coast Opera, Peach State Opera, and Capitol City Opera. He is known for roles, such as, Goro (Madama Butterfly), Witch (Hansel and Gretel), Giles Corey (The Crucible), Gherardo (Gianni Schicchi), Beppe (Pagliacci). Other roles of his include Guillot (Manon), Camille de Rosillon (The Merry Widow), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), Kaspar (Amahl and the Night Visitors), Monostatos (The Magic Flute), Parpignol (La Boheme), and Don Curzio (Le Nozze di Figaro). As a soloist, Mr. Smith had his international debut in 2022 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. He has also appeared as a soloist in Alabama and Georgia at multiple venues.

He has also spent time behind the scenes having served as Production Stage Manager for shows including Tosca, Don Giovanni, Carmen, Albert Herring, Il Trittico and The Gondoliers, as well as scenes programs with Opera in the Ozarks and University of Alabama Opera Theatre. His stage directing credits include portions of The Mikado, Barber of Seville, Suor Angelica, Rigoletto, Marriage of Figaro, and West Side Story. He served as Assistant Director on productions of The Gondoliers, The Merry Widow, Pagliacci, and The Magic Flute. Mr. Smith is a double graduate of The University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in vocal performance and a minor in choral conducting. His voice teachers include Dr. Susan Fleming, Dr. Paul Houghtaling and Dr. Rachel Mathes.
