Louis de Caix d'Hervelois (1670-1759) wrote mainly chamber music, much of it for the viola da gamba, flute and pardessus. He was a composer and bass viol virtuoso. A brilliant student of Marin Marais and Saint-Colombe, d'Hervelois captured the elegance and grace of the Enlightenment era. Born in Amiens, France, the composer mostly stayed in his native France, but did move to Paris. He died in Paris in 1759. He is known for eight published collections of pieces, six for one and two viols with basso continuo and two for transverse flute and continuo. D'Hervelois' music has been much celebrated by baroque musicians such as Jordi Savall. This sonata was originally written for the pardessus de viol or pardessus, which is a small viol played like a cello, but with the range of a violin/viola. Dan has arranged the piece for viola d'amore and continuo, and it works beautifully on the viola d'amore.
