Vincent Tsai
composer

Vincent is a high school composer and cellist and has been studying composition for 3 years under teacher Sarana Chou. His work for orchestra, “from Kepler 22-b”, was recently selected as the California State winner for the MTNA Composition Competition, and he has been awarded other prizes throughout his composition journey. People describe his music as humorous, inventive, witty, imaginative, and full of drama. As a cellist, he plays in numerous solo, chamber and large ensemble settings, and coaches younger musicians as well. As a bonus, he likes to explore other instruments which further helps him in his compositional skills. However, he is still more human than music, and in his free time he likes to eat food and complain about math.

A Christmas Monster program notes:

A Christmas Monster is a juxtaposition of the festive holiday season as well as the fantasy of savage creatures. The compositional ideas of this work sprout from traditional Christmas carols, but with a contemporary twist, written to amuse the listeners as well as the performers. A medley of holiday carols will be heard throughout the orchestra, but they will be distorted with a contemporary harmonic language. This piece is composed between October and December of 2024 and completed just as the holiday season started.
