Soprano Meechot Marrero has been called, “a revelation…a young Puerto Rican star with a great career ahead” (El Nuevo Día). Previously a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble, the 2023-2024 season (Marrero’s eighth with the company) included performances as Papagena in Die Zauberflöte, Frasquita in Carmen, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, and Blumenmädchen II in Parsifal, in addition to a return to the company as a guest artist for a role and house debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Other engagements of note for the season included a debut with Opera San Antonio as Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel and concert appearances with the Nashville Symphony, the Sun Valley Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music Festival (as Papagena under the baton of Sir Donald Runnicles).
The 2024-2025 season includes a number of important assignments for Ms. Marrero including Carmina Burana with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, a role debut TBA with the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, as well as return guest artist appearances with the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Gretel in Hansel und Gretel, the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen, and Frasquita in Carmen.
A native of Corozal, Puerto Rico, Ms. Marrero is the recipient of the Career Bridges grant from the Schuyler Foundation, and the Phyllis Curtin Career Entry Prize from the Yale School of Music. She began her musical studies with the San Juan Children’s Choir, and, after studying molecular biology at the University of Puerto Rico, completed a Bachelor of Music from the Puerto Rico Music Conservatory (where she graduated as the Valedictorian of her class) and a Master of Music from the Yale School of Music at Yale University.
