Benjamin Robinson
Director

Ben Robinson is the Artistic Director of Raylynmor Opera (New Hampshire) and Opera Ithaca (New York), the Interim Artistic and Executive Director of Opera Steamboat, and the Managing Director of Lyric Fest (Philadelphia). As a stage and film director, he has mounted numerous productions, highlighted by new productions for which he also wrote new English libretti: Madame Butterfly, Macbeth, Hansel and Gretel, The Barber of Seville, Die Fledermaus, La Cenerentola, and Pauline Viardot’s Cendrillon. Ben's film production of Bastien and Bastienne, with his original English libretto setting the action in the social media-obsessed present, was released in March 2021 and subsequently streamed at the Arlington International Film Festival. He directed and edited a film release of Pagliacci for Raylynmor Opera in October 2020, and directed Gianni Schicchi for Opera Ithaca, which Opera Magazine heralded as the "deftest use... of Covid-era technology as part of modern operatic reality." His film production of Hansel and Gretel, released by Opera Ithaca and Resonance Works Pittsburgh in 2021, will join the Opera Philadelphia Channel lineup in 2023. He was announced as a 2021 recipient of the Ewing Arts Award, which celebrates the diversity and excellence of artists in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire.

Projects for the 2022-2023 season include directing Nabucco for the inaugural Opera Ithaca Festival, new productions of The Impresario and The Pirates of Penzance for Ithaca College; Hänsel und Gretel with Temple University; Orpheus in the Underworld with Opera Ithaca and Raylynmor Opera; and Gianni Schicchi with Opera Steamboat.

Directing highlights include Gianni Schicchi, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Iolanthe, Suor Angelica, and La tragédie de Carmen. Upcoming projects for the 2021-2022 season include directing a film production of his innovative English production Hansel and Gretel, as well as directing Falstaff (Raylynmor Opera); Le nozze di Figaro (Opera Ithaca); The Medium (Amarillo Opera); and the world premiere of Sally Lamb McCune's We Wear the Sea Like a Coat (Opera Ithaca/Ithaca College).
