For more than three decades, Mariachi Sol de Acapulco has been bringing the vibrant sound of traditional Mexican music to audiences across Idaho and beyond. Founded in Caldwell in the mid-1980s by Rudy Rodriguez and John Cochrane, the ensemble began at a time when mariachi was still unfamiliar to many in the Treasure Valley. With a mix of local musicians—including talent borrowed from the Boise Philharmonic—the group established itself as a cultural pioneer, performing Mexican classics with authenticity and heart. From those early beginnings, Mariachi Sol de Acapulco has grown into an institution that has introduced generations to the beauty of mariachi.
Throughout its history, the ensemble has been a cornerstone of community celebrations, performing at weddings, quinceañeras, civic events, and regional festivals. Their versatility has also brought them to major stages, including high-profile collaborations such as accompanying Mexican singer Erasmo Catarino, winner of La Academia, and joining Opera Idaho and soprano Cecilia Violetta López in the 2022 Celebrando a México concert at the Idaho Botanical Garden. These performances highlight the group’s ability to bridge traditions—uniting mariachi with opera, folklórico dance, and classical ensembles to create unforgettable cultural experiences.
Equally important as their performances is the group’s role in education and mentorship. Since the late 1980s, Mariachi Sol de Acapulco has partnered with schools and arts organizations to teach mariachi instruments to young musicians. Many of these students have gone on to perform with the ensemble itself, carrying forward the traditions they first learned in after-school programs. The group’s commitment to passing on the music has made them a vital part of Idaho’s Hispanic and Latino communities, keeping cultural heritage alive while inspiring new generations.
In recognition of their artistry and dedication, Mariachi Sol de Acapulco received the 2018 Idaho Governor’s Award for Excellence in Folk & Traditional Arts. This honor reflects not only their musicianship but also their enduring role as cultural ambassadors for the state. Today, Mariachi Sol de Acapulco continues to share the joy of mariachi at community gatherings, festivals, and major concert stages. Whether serenading at an intimate celebration or performing for thousands, their music brings people together in a spirit of heritage, pride, and fiesta.
