Brennan Blankenship, praised as a "thrilling" American soprano and versatile performer, is quickly establishing herself in the opera world. Hailed as "reminiscent of the Golden Age of singers," she is an exciting talent.
Ms. Blankenship’s 2025 season is highlighted by a return to Kentucky to perform Krystyna Zywulska in Jake Heggie / Gene Scheer’s Another Sunrise, a one-woman opera presented with Kentucky Ballet in collaboration with Kentucky Opera. She then makes her debut at Opera Idaho as Annina / Violetta cover in La Traviata. Closing the operatic season in Houston, Brennan returns to HOPERA in Mozart’s The Producer (Der Schauspieldirektor) as Madame Silberklang, renamed Barbara Seville.
Her 2023-2024 season included a return to Opera North in a role debut as Julie Jordan in Carousel, a house and role debut as Mabel in Kentucky Opera’s The Pirates of Penzance, and her role debut as Michaëla in HOPERA’s inaugural production of Carmen—a company she co-founded and where she serves as Executive Director.
In summer 2022, she debuted as Violetta in Opera North’s La Traviata. In January 2020, Brennan transitioned to soprano repertoire after recognizing her vocal affinity for the range. She was slated to join Michigan Opera Theater’s Young Artist Program (2020–2022) as a transitioning soprano, but the engagement was canceled due to COVID.
During summer 2019, Ms. Blankenship originated the role of Brittomara in the world premiere of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s If I Were You as a Merola Opera Program artist. Notable mezzo-soprano roles include Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Hermia (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Meg Page (Falstaff), Mrs. Noye (Noye’s Fludde), and Jo/Meg (Little Women). Concert highlights include Bach’s Magnificat, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, and Handel’s Messiah.
A dedicated advocate of art song, she toured the Midwest in 2019 performing Moritz Moszkowski’s Thraenen cycle with collaborative pianist Joseph Welch.
Training includes apprenticeships with the Merola Opera Program, Kentucky Opera’s Sanford Studio Artist Program, Canto Vocal Program, Berlin Opera Academy, and Mill City Summer Opera.
Competition achievements include Second Place at the Dorothy Nocity Vocal Competition (Palm Springs Opera Guild), First Prize at the 2019 and 2017 Young Texas Artists Music Competition, and semifinalist placements in the Montserrat Caballé International Competition, Sullivan Foundation Awards, George London Foundation Competition, and Opera Index Competition.
