Program Note
Corps is the second installment in a creative and scholarly research project about the ballet Giselle. My research is focused on understanding how a nineteenth-century ballet fits into our twenty-first-century landscape. I am particularly interested in how Giselle and the Romantic ballet as a genre shape conceptions of feminity. Through my creative research, I am asking how we can take the story of Giselle and retell it through a feminist lens. In Corps, I am exploring themes of isolation and community through the dichotomy between the patriarchal society of Act I with the matriarchal society of Act II.
