CARL FLINK is the artistic director of Black Label Movement (BLaM), an award-winning dance company based in Minnesota. Under his leadership, BLaM projects have received numerous accolades, including a 2014 Upper Midwest Emmy Award, two 2016 Upper Midwest Emmy Award nominations, the 2015 Twin Cities StarTribune Best of MN, two McKnight Artist Fellowships for Choreography, and a 2022 MAP Fund Award. Flink’s work, which has been featured in Dance Magazine, is known for its athleticism and humanistic themes. His commissions include the American Dance Festival, multiple TED talks, The Guthrie Theater, VocalEssence, Minnesota Orchestra, and various universities. His collaboration with biomedical engineer David Odde, The Moving Cell Project (MCP), focuses on The Bodystorming System—a technique combining choreographic principles with scientific research (www.bodystormingsystem.com). MCP has received National Cancer Institute funding and produced four TED Talks, including "A Modest Proposal: Dance v. Powerpoint." Flink is the Director of the University of Minnesota Dance Program and the Nadine Jette Sween Professor of Dance. In the 1990s, he danced with the Limón Dance Company and others. He holds a JD from Stanford Law School and a summa cum laude B.A. from the University of Minnesota. Flink and his partner, Emilie Plauché Flink, co-parent three children: Willa, Freyja, and Iris.
