Clarinet Candy was composed by Leroy Anderson to highlight the quick fingers and playful personalities of the clarinet section. Anderson, born in 1908, was an American composer known for writing short, light concert pieces. He gained fame for his clever pieces The Typewriter, Blue Tango, and Sleigh Ride. Many of Anderson’s works were written for and performed by the Boston Pops, formerly conducted by film composer John Williams. Williams described Anderson as, “one of the great American masters of light orchestral music”. This description fits the characteristics of Clarinet Candy perfectly. Although technically challenging, this piece remains fun and cheerful as the clarinets soar through rapid passages of notes and a candy shop of sounds is created.
