The Pledge of Allegiance (1970)
Alfred Reed (1921-2005)

H. Stephen Smith, vocal soloist

The Pledge of Allegiance for band and either solo voice or mixed chorus is a beautiful adaptation of the American promise of loyalty and patriotism. The music captures this spirit with grandeur and reverence, opening with a noble fanfare that sets the tone for the rest of the composition. As the vocalist sings the pledge, Reed’s music elevates the original spoken words, creating an accompaniment that is both majestic and moving. The melody flows seamlessly alongside the vocalist, enhancing the emotional impact and adding a sense of unity, as the music embodies the ideas of liberty, justice, and patriotism expressed within the pledge. Reed’s wonderful composition inspires audiences to reflect on the values that bind a nation together.

Alfred Reed is one of America’s most prolific and frequently performed composers. He was also an experienced conductor, administrator, concert producer, university professor, performer, and author.
