“Glück das mir verblieb,” (also known as Marietta’s Lied) by Erich Wolfgang is from the opera Die tote Stadt, which premiered in Germany in 1920 when Korngold was twenty-three years old. The opera centers around a man named Paul who several years before had lost his wife. He meets Marietta on the street and her resemblance to his deceased wife attracts him to her immediately. He invites her to his home and asks her to play a song his wife used to sing. The song is about the resurrection of a loved one, and Marietta plays the song on his late wife’s lute.
