“Come to Jesus” was written by Adam Guettel for an Off- Broadway revue called Saturn Returns that ran for 16 performances in 1998. It was then released as a song cycle called “Myths and Hymns” the following year. The song begins with a young woman in a waiting room, and we come to find that she is a Christian in a failing relationship who is about to receive an abortion. Later in the song we hear from her partner, who seems to be fleeing the situation and the relationship. Both are deeply conflicted over the situation, and the song takes on a trance-like quality as the pair express their grief and hope for forgiveness.
