Quatre Visages for Viola and Piano
Darius Milhaud

Darius Milhaud was a Jewish and French composer who fled from France to the United States during World War II. Throughout his life, he picked up influence from Latin American and jazz styles. Most notably, Dave Brubeck studied under Milhaud, even naming his son Darius in honor of him. After World War II, Milhaud continued to embrace Jewish musical traditions more often in honor of his loved ones lost during the Holocaust.

One day while reading, Emily came across these four visages and fell in love with their wandering melodies and playful characters. The Quatre Visages represent the portraits of four women, commissioned by the violinists from the Pro Arte Quartet, Germain Prévost. Both Prévost and Milhaud were very fond of women and these portraits contain inside jokes, unknown to us, within them. Written in 1943 in a war-torn world, these pieces feel almost light-hearted and nostalgic, dreaming and remembering better days.
