Legend
Joachim Stutschewsky

Joachim Stutschewsky was born February 7, 1891 in Romny, Russian Empire and died November 14, 1982 in Tel Aviv.

Joachim Stutschewsky was a Ukrainian composer and cellist born to a family of klezmer musicians (klezmorim). After moving to Vienna in 1924, he served as the cellist of the Kolisch Quartet for three years. He later moved to Tel Aviv in 1938 and spent the rest of his life there.

Stutschewsky had a remarkable interest in Jewish folklore and Hasidic melodies, and his compositions are often inspired by the tunes he collected during his studies. The Legend for cello and piano, composed in 1952, is based on a melody by nineteenth century cantor Yoel David Levenstein. The work is intensely emotional and soulful, with changing moods throughout.
